“It’s been such a long time…”

The Section Quartet has been out of touch with you for several months now, but we miss you and hope you’ve been thinking of us as much as we’ve been thinking of you. We’ve been hard at work on our album, playing on sessions and gigging around the country since the last time we spoke. Let’s go backwards in order to go forwards:

JAYWALKING IN AUSTIN

While in Austin to play at SXSW, TSQ participated in a filmed piece for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno - airing Thursday, March 22nd - with Wayne Coyne, lead singer of the Flaming Lips. Together with Wayne, we helped some hard-working Austinites star in their very own music videos to the tune of TSQ rockin’ out some Led Zeppelin, Radiohead and Queens of the Stone Age. At the end of the shoot, Wayne turned to Eric and said “well, that was weird, wasn’t it?” Coming from the head Flaming Lip, that’s sayin’ something! Stay up late or Tivo the show, but whatever you do, DO NOT MISS THIS ONE THURSDAY NIGHT!!!

DECCA THE HALLS

At the end of 2006 TSQ entered the studio with producer Linda Perry to begin work on our debut album for Decca Records, the legendary record label once home to The Rolling Stones. In December, two and a half intense weeks of work with Linda were followed by several days with Jon Brion, who is also producing tracks for the album. Working with both Linda and Jon has been a scintillating experience: eye opening, challenging, fun and exhausting all at once. Work has continued into the new year and the album is nearing completion. Fingers crossed, the album should be out in the summer of 2007.

SXSW

While our energies have been focused on recording our album, we have done a few live shows, most notably at the aforementioned SXSW Festival on March 15th. Gathering an enthusiastic and large early-evening crowd, we played some of our favorites, including the debut of new arrangements of The Strokes’ “Juicebox”, Soundgarden’s “Black Hole Sun” and The Postal Services’ “Such Great Heights”, all of which have been recorded for the album.

BEAT IT WALLY

TSQ was proud to appear at a benefit concert for cancer-stricken musician Wally Ingram in January. Ingram, a long-time friend of (our cellist) Richard, was overwhelmed by the turnout of his friends and colleagues: Bonnie Raitt, Crowded House, Jackson Browne, Keb’ Mo, Victoria Williams, and Garbage, just to name a few, performed for a sold out audience at the Alex Theater in Glendale, CA. In addition to opening the show ourselves, TSQ joined Garbage for a 3-song set (their first live show in almost two years). It was a thrilling night benefiting an amazing human being and his family.

SESSIONS & COLLABORATIONS

As we look back at the last several months, it’s hard to believe how many fun sessions we’ve performed: Rilo Kiley, Ryan Adams, the Jonas Brothers, Rooney, Loudon Wainwright, Joe Henry, Fiona Apple, Jakob Dylan, Grant-Lee Phillips, Van Hunt, Dr. Dre, Courtney Love, and Ben Jelen have all utilized TSQ of late.

TSQ has also guested in concert with the Autumn Defense (fronted by Jon Stirrat and Pat Sansone of Wilco), Garbage (mentioned above), and on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno with Tom Higginson of Plain White T’s.

UP & COMING

The summer 2007 release of our album brings so much anticipation and uncertainty to our lives. We’re incredibly excited about the album we’re making and truly believe that with the guidance of Linda Perry and Jon Brion we’re creating something different and exciting. We like it already and hope that you will too! Stay tuned for an official release date, live appearances, and other news about our studio collaborations that will be picking up steam in the coming months. Join us for our wild ride!
